Boring backups, tested on a Sunday
I keep two copies of everything that matters: one on the machine itself and one somewhere that does not share its failure modes. Once a month I restore a random file from the second copy, just to see it work.
The only backup you can trust is one you have restored. Everything else is a hope with a cron entry.
